Love and support, goes both ways.
Wed, Apr 13, 2011 at 1:46 pm

Being in the classroom with the children ignites some type of joy. At first I did not know what it would be like. I knew that most of the kids were returners from the summer or previous years before. I thought they may be so caught up in how things were run before that I would not get a fair chance to show them the real me. Being a new face is hard to do when they see so many of them. As months go on, I get a sense of calm when walking into the classroom and being greeted by the kids. They are so into our daily routine that when I forget something, (in unison), they quickly remind me. Whether it be about stars for their sticker charts or timeouts for their behavior, they still remind me. I have gotten so used to them and they to me that when we don’t see each other, with open arms, we greet with a big hug and say “I missed you”!  Even though we are here to support the children and love them and be constant in their life for this little time, they do the same for us adults without any realization.

Kids Dress Up Nicely!
Wed, Mar 9, 2011 at 3:58 pm

On Friday, Feb 11, the kids of Camp Faith enjoyed a Valentine’s Day “Prom” with a night of fun games, good food, music and just being around friends! The idea came to Camp Faith director, Aleisha, when she heard of people doing proms for younger kids, but she had never experienced it. All of the children came dressed up nicely with the girls wearing dresses and boys wearing shirts and ties - they really took it seriously. Aleisha was surprised to see how many children were dancing to the music and participating.

Although everything was perfect there were a few things that especially stood out to Aleisha. “We had a few children perform and show their talents. One of the children that really stood out to me was Roodson P. who sang a song called, “I Give Myself Away.” It was so beautiful and shocked everyone in the room because we didn’t realize that he had such a nice voice. Another highlight of the night was when we announced Camp Faith ’s Prom “Prince and Princess”, Roodson P. and Abvianna R.  I was really surprised how well the other children responded. It was a wonderful night. Just seeing the smiles on the faces of the kids made everything worth it and I’m glad I was able to give them this experience.  Seeing the children happy brought tears to my eyes."

Climbing Trees and Crossing Creeks
Tue, Jan 4, 2011 at 5:05 pm

Camp Faith loves to explore the great outdoors, but there isn’t much nature in Camden. Thankfully, a local park called Saddler’s Woods allowed several Camp Faith students to enjoy nature recently – climbing on trees and crossing creek beds.  It was a fun time!

A Party of Thoughtfulness and Generosity!
Tue, Jan 4, 2011 at 5:45 pm

Students from Clearview High School led by teacher Jennifer Satterfield hosted a Christmas party for Rosedale AfterSchool Program (Camp Faith) for the second year in a row.  The students brought cookies and milk, and Christmas stockings to the children.  One student dressed up as Santa and passed out the stockings, talking to each child individually and encouraging them. It was a great afternoon and the children felt very loved by the thoughtfulness and generosity of the students of Clearview High School.

Camp Faith spends Spring Break in Tennessee!
Tue, Aug 24, 2010 at 8:31 pm

Fresh air, beautifuuntains, seeing the stars at night - we were definitely not in Camden anymore!  For Spring Break 2010 the fourth grade class of Rosedale AfterSchool Program at UrbanPromise Ministries enjoyed five days in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.  One child asked while driving through the Smoky Mountains National Park - "Where are all the police?" This was only one of the many differences between the most dangerous city in America - Camden and the countryside of East Tennessee that the kids noticed.

The kids enjoyed hiking, horsebike riding, visiting a children's science museum, go kart riding, ice skating, and many more activities.  Some of these activities "Most of all, the kids enjoyed quality time with our group - the 12 hour van ride and hanging out at the cabin.  "I'm glad we could all be together," Irving, age 10, remarked when asked about his favorite part of the trip. There were many opportunities for conversations about life and faith that I know none of the kids will ever forget.

Our hearts are very grateful for the UrbanPromise sponsors who made this trip possible.  It was nice to have a trip where we didn't have to worry about money, but could enjoy ourselves and allow the kids to have a "family" vacation that they may have never experienced before. Thanks for giving our Camden kids the trip of a lifetime!

Camp Faith embarks on their summer voyage with Jesus as their Captain!
Tue, Aug 24, 2010 at 8:31 pm

With 80 campers, 8 StreetLeaders, 7 interns, and numerous work group and local volunteers, Camp Faith in the summer is a busy place!

Our theme this year is "Jesus is my Captain." We built a cardboard pirate ship in our Opening Program room and will be teaching the kids about how we are accepted, loved, and forgiven by Jesus.  Summer interns will be teaching life skills, art, recreation and Bible classes. Once a week we will go swimming, basketball practice and games are two afternoons a week, and we also have a dozen discipleship groups. We are excited to continue to build relationships with returning campers and get to know new ones as well.

After the first day of camp, five year old Akeem ran to his mother and declared, "Mom, I had a such a great day!"

Please pray with us that every day this summer will be a great day for the kids of Camp Faith.

Camp Faith takes a trip to the Riversharks Game!
Tue, Aug 24, 2010 at 8:31 pm

Thanks to a generous donation from Campbell's Soup, this week Camp Faith was able to enjoy an evening of family fun at a Camden Riversharks baseball game.  Seven families from East Camden, plus the staff of Camp Faith, were able to attend.

Every Little Bit Counts
Tue, Aug 24, 2010 at 8:31 pm

Every bit counts when it comes to items donated to our summer camps and after school programs.  Donors recently gave Camp Faith large packs of chalk, which our art class interns used to create sidewalk chalk self portraits with the children (see photos above).  Because of the generosity of our donors, all of the children were able to participate in the activity. There was enough chalk for everyone!

We also couldn't make it through the school year without donated items from UrbanPromise supporters.  Pencils are a daily necessity for homework time, computers help our children do research projects, eraseable marker boards allow the children to practice their spelling words, board games faciliate relationship building.

When an item is donated to UrbanPromise, we appreciate it and make our best effort to put it to good use!
